Publication: In Search of Textile Legacies

Mainland China, Mexico, Indonesia

2019

Narrative Made contributed the essay “In search of textiles legacies: Excerpts from an ethnographic journal on embodied practices” in A Reader Textile Legacies: Now and Future, published by Centre of Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) in December 2019. The publication revolves around the ecologies behind textile production and the complexities of contexts, cultures and traditions these entails. It also makes present the urgency of understanding those ecologies through the ethics and engagement that characterizes The Textile Atlas as an interface to share this knowledge.

In the form of a travelling ethnography, the essay captures textile stories in the contexts of sustainable development, embodied learning and generational connections. Artisans and field works included needlework in Guizhou in China, embroidery and weaving in Oaxaca in Mexico, Kharnak nomadic weaving in Changthang Plateau of India, and batik in Java in Indonesia.
